   The Return

The Immediacy and Finality of Christ's Return

A common mistake made by some theories about the return of Jesus Christ assert that when Jesus comes again into this time and space, it is not a final once-and-for all appearance. Some theories suggest that Jesus will somehow - secretly or visible - appear once to "take away" His church, only to again (at some later date) appear for final judgment.

For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.

"Immediately after the distress of those days
" 'the sun will be darkened,
       and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'

"At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other (Matthew 24:27-31)

So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. "Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, 'My master is staying away a long time,' and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 24:44-51)

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. (Matthew 25:31-33)

"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." (Matthew 26:64)

"At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. " (Mark 13:26)

Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 1:7-8)

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. (1 Thessalonians 4:16)

Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5:1-3)

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare (2 Peter 3:10)

The words of Jesus are clear

In no particular order, Jesus' return will be characterized by...

  • The day Jesus returns will be very noisy
  • Shouts and a loud trumpet blast will announce Jesus
  • Jesus will appear in the sky - once
  • Jesus will appear with great POWER and GLORY
  • It will be obvious - as lightning is obvious
  • All nations will see Jesus at that time, and mourn
  • Jesus will send His angels to gather His people (believers)
  • Graves will be opened up and believers will rise from the dead
  • The sky will be transformed, there will be massive atmospheric modification
  • The Earth will be transformed, there will be no hiding place
  • His Return will bring judgment
The next time Jesus returns, it is once and for all - nothing stealthful about it. When He returns, it is for keeps.
